Seasoning is a fully synthetic tone with a hand-made aesthetic.
Often when working on these compositions I begin with the rhythm by playing and modulating live. The modulations typically bring me to a place of hearing melody, and I build the structure in a live recording. If things go well, meaning I don’t make any mistakes, then I leave the music alone and work on the production. If things don’t go well, then knives out!
This performance is a bit different because it was made for the short film, Seasoning, as Zim + Teemo, animated by Gurleen Rai. Having a defined length and visual focus, I worked entirely on bass melody and beat modulation in my first pass. This makes the backbone of the song which allows the lead synthesizers to work alone or in tandem with the visuals to carry you through the story.
The lead synths are vocalists, narrators, and Sirens calling us through the undulating, strange encounters of a world we seem to recognize, but barely understand. These are monophonic Moog synths played individually. One is a response to the other, filling in the gaps and correcting each other as they recount. The synths are the arrhythmic response, the Seasoning if you will, to the droning, spasm that creeps and crawls us through the sub frequencies.
When experiencing Seasoning it is hard to tell which story teller is taking precedence at any given interval. It is a story that must be examined from every facet; sometimes as a new person.
My daughter made this in art class today. It has a strange air of familiarity to it... Hmmm.
