Rails for feed algo markets on Lens are here for some time now and you can test it on @hey . But the example algos did not really pick steam. I see few possible reasons:
➡️ There's not enough bulk data for algos to shine yet
➡️ Current algos are not good enough
➡️ UX around them is not smooth enough (on Hey)
➡️ Users do not have enough control over them. Imagine that you choose an algo and then further tune it to your liking. E.g., set amount or rage, opinion diversity, amount of random stuff to surprise you, etc.). That's something I'd definitely use.
But why is that? Are we simply too early?
Here's one more piece of the puzzle. Monetization of such algos is rather tricky. For apps to share revenues with 3rd parties, the latter must provide something of unique value. Users must badly want specific algos, or it must be hard enough to build or replicate good ones. This could be the core reason behind most of the above.
Assuming we want to select and tune feed algos ourselves (we do, right?), what could be done to incentivize devs to create such algos and apps to offer them? 🧐
