Kalliope

“You can see it coming and you know it’s true,
One by one we’re all convinced to collude,
Despite the fact that we know there’s a better way,
The will is weak and the heart likes to play it safe,
Don’t give in when they whisper. Coordinate.”

2 - This song took the same concepts of midi and real drums, synthesis and guitars, volume and tone but used them in a very different way than the first song. I started this one on guitar then keys using an electric bass, midi synth so it started with the driving rhythm. I used a few variations of the electric bass synth track to create the filter sweeps. All of the heavier songs used only one guitar to get a raw, less produced garage tone, and let the synthesis have space around the 2 piece rock band. One of the funnest parts of this song for me is that the bass drum is a midi kick that is not lined up with anything and is rather arrhythmic but you don’t notice because the bass, guitar, and cymbals keep the rhythm without the kick. The cymbals are two tracks of real cymbals each recorded as one take with the song so the percussive elements weren’t written or recorded together. It all started from the groove of the melodic rhythm.

Thematically, I feel like this song has one big question: where is the line between collusion and coordination? It seems like it should be obvious, but even villains see themselves as the hero. How much of your personality and social choices are colluding against others to play it safe rather than coordinate for the good of everyone? How does this affect your art? How does this affect your psyche?
