Lens x Patreon?
I’ve been sitting on this idea for a few days now. What would it look like if Patreon existed on Lens? Lens has almost all of the infrastructure required for the next generation of the creator economy to build upon, yet we haven’t it come together in a cohesive app experience built around creators and the tools that they need to attract, engage and reward their communities long term.
There are a few aspects of Lens that stand out to me as pivotal to solving many of the issues inherent in creator economy tech in web2 today.
When a web2 creator tries to migrate their fans from a ‘reach’ platform like IG or YouTube to an ‘engage’ platform like Patreon the process is always difficult. Typically only a small % make the migration across and the creator’s audience becomes ever more fragmented. Len’s follower graph means that creators would bring their following with them when setting up a new profile space, providing better odds of converting followers into fans. It also means that their Lens follower count would act as social proofing for any, new, would-be fans that stumble upon them. Win-win.
Open actions are another key piece of the puzzle. The ability to subscribe to a creator from any Lens social feed would be a huge boost to creators. Today creators have to pull their fans to Patreon to subscribe, but on Lens we can bring the subscription action to wherever the would-be fans reside: Orb, Hey, etc.
Community wallet activity (think Interface Social) would provide an extra level of discovery for fans once they join a creator’s community. Personally I would love to see what all Galverse holders are minting, buying and trading in a social feed, that’s also a great perk for joining the community.
Creator Shops also have a huge opportunity here, allowing fans to instantly purchase and collect all sorts of digital and physical goods from a creator directly on the social timeline. Swipe to buy a tote. Swipe to collect a gif. Creators can then add a layer of unique gating requirements such as account follows, or NFTs/tokens held. Features such as revenue splits and reshare % rewards make this the most flexible creator store on the web.
Lastly, platforms like Patreon have historically struggled with discovery of new creators you might like to follow and subscribe to. They’ve typically left this role of content discovery to be handled by the ‘reach’ platforms like YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Lens is uniquely positioned to offer both a compelling subscription experience and best-in-class discovery experience just by including a Lens feed UI within the an app experience. This could create a very unique app experience where the user seamlessly transitions the blurriness between Lens public Feed and premium creator posts all within a single UI built for consumption and interaction.
I had to get this idea out of my head, so I put together a few scrappy screens for fun tonight with lots of ideas and pixels cribbed from: Patreon, Orb, P00ls, Interface and others. Hopefully this can inspire anyone thinking about these ideas on Lens!

after now two summers in tokyo, a considerable time in los angeles, and a sprinkling of european variety i can safely say there is nothing in the world like a new york city summer. the feeling of finding your way to the nearest rooftop and staying up there til the sun goes down or after a night out til the sun comes up, there’s really no better place to enjoy cooler air and the full spectrum of the sky. memories are made up here. who says the beast coast can’t have sunsets?
