✨ World Music #14 – Every week, I select a different country from around the globe, featuring an artist + track that I love ✨ Next up: 🇳🇬 NIGERIA 🇳🇬 This is the glowing, Afrobeats meets r'n'b, groove of Ayra Starr’s ‘Bloody Samaritan’ open.spotify.com/track/1OoPhcM78evXIxjmSzCnmf?si=2c651ba5bdae4ef5
The musical journey of Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, aka Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, started during childhood – thanks to Starr's parents encouraging her to explore her creative spirit from an early age.
Outside of Ayra's home, she began singing at age 10 in a high school choir, while also writing songs with her brother around the same time.
Influenced by styles including Afrobeats, r'n'b, hip-hop, highlife, and dancehall, 'Bloody Samaritan' is an early single from the young yet prolific 20-year-old artist. The song was originally released in 2021, and also featured a remix with Kelly Rowland, which was released the following year, to coincide with Starr's debut album, called 19 & Dangerous.
Lyrically, 'Bloody Samaritan' – whose title refers to vibe killers – includes sage-like wisdom about how to deal with energy vampires:
"A wise man said, 'Follow the stars'
There you shall find a piece of advice
If you hate your enemies, enemies shine
If you're not a friend of me, enter the light
'Cause you can never kill my vibe
Got here with no sacrifices
Everything was takеn, still had to make it
Vibe killer, mе I no go take shit
Vibe killer, bloody Samaritan
Protect my energy from your bad aura...
Na my pastor say I be my healer
Everything I desire, I go receive
My rhythm flow like a river..."
