Google DeepMind has unveiled PEER, a groundbreaking AI architecture utilizing over one million tiny "experts" to enhance language model efficiency and scalability. These micro-experts, essentially small neural networks with a single neuron, replace the traditional large feedforward layers found in Transformer models.

PEER builds on the "Mixture of Experts" (MoE) principle but takes it further by employing a vast number of tiny experts. Using "Product Key Memory," PEER efficiently selects the most relevant experts from millions without exhaustive searches. Experiments reveal that PEER surpasses conventional Transformer and existing MoE models in efficiency, demonstrating significant advancements in scalability and potential for lifelong learning. This innovative approach marks a promising direction for more efficient and scalable AI models.
