On a cold, moonless night on April 14, 1912, a 125-meter-long iceberg — the remaining part of the 500-metre ice that had broken away from the Greenlandfjord a year earlier — hit the Titanic, a passenger ship bound for New York from Southampton. In less than three hours, the ship on the maiden voyage sank and killed more than 1,500 passengers and crew. The ship's wreck is now located about 640 kilometers southeast of the Newfoundland coast, nearly 3.8 kilometers underwater.
