This week’s guest writer is Alexandre Lavallee from Selas selas-studio.webflow.io/
Q: Tell us about yourself
A: In one word: Explorer !
I’m Alex (@selas.lens,) on the personal side I'm a Parisian DJ, vinyl curator and a huge art lover. I love to imagine bridges between the culture world and the tech world, that’s what I have always been passionate about.
On the professional side, I started out in tech in 2013 coming from Microsoft, Ubisoft and Google. When Covid hit, I just turned 30 yo, and I had this inner realization that I wanted to leave Big Tech corp to start doing something truly groundbreaking in the AI sphere.
I spend my time on creative projects, learning and exploring ideas with AI and artistic communities.
Q: Tell us about your project(s) and what is your mission?
Well this year has been the Eureka moment for “Text To Anything” - most of us have heard about Dall-E, Midjourney or Stable Diffusion. Yet there’s a new cool kid on the block with us !
Most of my projects are crystallized in my role as Selas CEO, a company specialized in building and providing the latest AI technology related to the act of creation.
We build AI tools to help people with content creation and make their lives easier. We have deep roots in the open source community and values. We want to contribute towards the greater good of society by helping AI become more sustainable, democratic and human-centric.
We believe that the creative act is a vector of construction, emotions and meaning in our lives.
Our long term mission is to simplify access to tools, use cases and knowledge in this field in order to allow as many people as possible to express their creativity in all its diversity.
Q: What excites you about Web3?
Exactly the same thing that excited me in the early days of open source, namely community involvement and the willingness to explore and rethink uses for technology including traditional modes of transaction...
I also see in the Web3 ecosystem a huge decentralized laboratory to launch projects in which it is easy to find complementary partners in terms of human and/or financial resources to amortize the risk of R&D with several people and thus increase the chances of serendipity.
Being a creator can be tough because there are so many sites that take credit for your work and take away your ownership of it. Web3 is our future; people have control over their own data and have access to new creation tools.
Q: What tips do you have for aspiring creators in the space?
Well I’ll speak for what I'm concerned about, so for any future AI-artist out there, I would like to remind you that all new generative AI are just simply tools, artifacts.
Even if technology has raced ahead, I would always refer to the definition of a piece of art from marcel duchamp based on 1 particular component: the intentionality of the artist. Be intentional, be open, be curious and start collaborating with others will be the best way to get inspired.
Q: What’s next for you?
Well, to be fair, to push hard as we do in research in generative AI - we need a kick ass team of passionate researchers & amazing UX lovers. So we are currently preparing to raise money, our goal would be to finish our fundraising by march’23.
Within 6 months, we were able to build a text-to-image AI engine with an image generation 4x faster than any other in the world, and we already have a solid partnership in the Web3 space with Lens. We need to push harder to see how the best of AI and the best of Web3 can merge together.
But as a surprise, we are working as we speak on research papers with Text-To-Video capabilities. So exciting !
With the recent development few conclusions comes to our minds.
The opportunity for AI is massive. It promises to automate the real economy and drive a step-function improvement in human productivity. It also promises a new creative leap, with AI art offering a new way to explore the human experience itself.
So much work is left to do. we are in the first wave of the AI revolution. Running machine learning at scale, personalized models, the multiverse — there is much to come. The brightest minds are leading the way and the new companies they build will define the next decade and beyond.
