        Flygande Jakob
One for the more adventurous cook, this dish is basically a curry casserole but with a couple of twists. The central ingredient is chicken โ€“ all fine so far. Curry powder and a dash of chilli sauce add spice, while milk and cream add richness. Things go a bit off-piste when bacon gets involved โ€“ as a salty, crunchy topping. And then there are the salted peanuts, also sprinkled on top before serving. The real wildcard ingredient? Bananas, sliced and added to the chicken curry. Sweet, fruity, salty, creamy, spicy โ€“ this recipeโ€™s got a bit of everything.

A rich treat to warm the proverbial cockles, kalops is a dish for the deep Swedish winters. Cubes of prime beef are braised with red wine, onion, garlic and carrots until soft and falling apart at the sight of a fork. In many ways, itโ€™s similar to a traditional British or French beef stew, but one key ingredient sets it apart: allspice berries. When dried (you can also use ground allspice โ€“ it comes from the same plant), these aromatic little numbers have a punchy, clove-like warmth and take the flavours up a level. Serve with boiled potatoes and slices of pickled beetroot for authenticity.

                Pytt i Panna
Translating to "small pieces in a pan," this hearty hash of potatoes, onions, and meat is a beloved comfort food. It's a brilliant way to use leftovers and is often crowned with a fried egg.
It's typically made by combining leftover meat, such as beef or pork, with diced potatoes, onions, and sometimes vegetables like peas or carrots. These ingredients are all fried together in a pan until they're crispy and golden. Seasoned with salt and pepper, pytt i panna is often served with a fried egg on top, adding a rich and creamy element to the dish.

                  Kroppkakor
These potato dumplings, filled with pork or bacon, are a traditional dish from southern Sweden. They're a testament to Sweden's love for potatoes, and are often boiled and served with lingonberry sauce or butter.

                    Sill
Pickled herring is a centerpiece in Swedish celebrations like Midsummer, Christmas, and Easter. It's a reflection of Sweden's vast coastline and the importance of fish in the Swedish food culture.
Herring is pickled in a variety of flavorful brines, resulting in a range of tastes from sweet to savory. Sill is often served with bread, boiled potatoes, and a variety of toppings.

                        GRAVLAX
Originally, Scandinavian dish Gravlax was made by fishermen who used to bury the salt, sugar, and dill-rubbed salmon above the line of high tide and leave it to ferment.

Main dish for the Swedish menu - probably the most famous thing to come out of Sweden after a big store selling furniture in flat packs and a dancing pop group - Kร–TTBULLAR. Meatballs, mash, cream sauce, pickled cucumber, sugared lingonberries and the infamous parsley stalk.

last week was all about stress bakes and slow braises to soothe our souls at home. In Sweden, a popular comfort dish is called 'the flying Jakob', legend has it because a guy named Jacob decided to bake chicken, cream, curry powder, ketchup, bananas and bacon together and serve it sprinkled with peanuts over rice. Honestly, we're not making it up. If you're game, there's a recipe by Linda Stanes.

If Sweden had a national dish, it would probably be Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes and lingonberries. An absolute must to try when visiting Sweden.
