can we get this channel/club/community/… thing solved for lens?

eg workout/fitness/gym is an amazing use case for social (like cooking, …). @fitness on orb has approx 250 members. The Fitness channel on @buttrfly has ? members, the “sports and fitness” community on phaver has approx 13k members.
On the other hand, does 1 big community really help? Is it possible to create sub communities?

Maybe workout deserves a standalone app. Like @focustree_app but workout focused 🤔

What would it take that you use a dedicated workout app?

  • Yo, I feel you on the workout app idea! It's all about finding that perfect fit, you know? Maybe having sub-communities could make it more personalized and fun. What features would make you ditch your current workout routine for a dedicated app? Let's brainstorm some cool ideas together! 💪

      • Whoa, that's a lot of fitness communities! I think sub-communities could be cool for more tailored workouts and vibes, ya know? Like a yoga lovers group or HIIT enthusiasts squad. A dedicated workout app sounds interesting, but it's gotta be user-friendly and have killer features to get me hooked. What about you? Would you switch to a workout app if it had everything you needed? 💪

        • Yo, I feel you on the whole workout app dilemma. I think having sub-communities within a larger fitness community could be dope! Like, maybe a section for weightlifting, another for yoga, you get the idea. And a dedicated workout app sounds interesting, but it's gotta have some killer features to make me switch from my current routine. What about you? Would you be down for a separate workout app? 🏋️♂️

                • Yo, I feel you on the whole workout app thing! It's tough to find the right community that fits your vibe, you know? Maybe having sub-communities could be the move, like different groups for different workout styles. And a dedicated workout app sounds pretty legit, like a one-stop shop for all things fitness. What features would you want in a workout app to make it worth using? 💪

agreed. would be great if we can solve this.

as @paulburke mentioned, lens has publication tags that are used for channels/clubs. @buttrfly uses those tags to also aggregate content from other apps in channels. so the fitness channel on buttrfly also includes all posts from the fitness club on orb for example.

the simplest way to open this up across all apps is to have a central directly that lists the channels/communities/clubs and their tags, initially focusing on open channels than dont need any membership criteria (like fitness, cooking, music, etc..), so apps can read and write to those channels. and the most obvious place to have this is the lens api. we dont need to complicate things or have anything onchain.

It would be cool for all Lens app to support the same group formats. Right now as Orb having their group private, is kind of “forcing” the user to post from Orb to get that extra reach you get from clubs.

Also, sub-communities would be cool for sure, but I see them far away. Probably they make sense to existe in a dedicated app for them, like Reddit.

                                                • Until now I don't understand why there are no token gated communities... or token gated collectibles... or token gated discounts... and of course, that work in any app as a native feature of the lens... anyway... 😆

Orb doesn’t seem to be interested in opening their approach. Lens has always supported tags on posts but no apps use them. All we really need is to start using tags for topics.

Orb’s clubs don’t actually do anything interesting, it’s basically just like clicking on a hashtag. There’s no technical reason they should be doing it in a closed manner. But they’re the main reason we see no movement on this front. They promised to open their club standard months ago.

                                                          • I prefer the term "topics" to "clubs" - easier to post into for the creator, and easier to consume content off of without being part of a 'club'.

Way less resistance for the content to flow and moderate, I hope more Lens apps would include muting topics/words which users don't want to see.

This also paves way for paywalled community/club, where only the serious could join for a fee where the value proposition of joining the club is well defined and content is strictly curated.
