DAINTREE NATIONAL PARK, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA. The mangrove is a maritime marsh ecosystem including a group of specific, mainly woody plants, developing only in the tidal swing zone, called foreshore, of the low coasts of tropical regions. We also find mangrove swamps at the mouths of certain rivers, and very exceptionally in fresh water. It constitutes one of the 14 major terrestrial biomes defined by the WWF. The mangrove provides benefits to populations in terms of food security, protection of the coasts against the onslaught of waves and carbon storage. It also contributes to reducing the risks of natural disasters linked to climate change.
