📍 Chaghcharan, Afghanistan 🇦🇫

What could possibly go wrong?

We wondered every time we were told we can’t leave the hotel alone. Because as much as we would "mask ourselves", wear local clothes, it could be seen from the plane that we were foreigners. Especially me, and if I wore a burka, with my 183 cm I can't be unnoticeable in a society where I'm taller than almost every man.

After ten hours of driving from Bamjan, we arrived to Chakhcharan, a very conservative city where you will rarely see a woman on the street. Touristically important only for the reason that the last settlement before the Jam Minaret is our last location on this trip, so we had to sleep there. The hotel was God forbid and our vip rooms were worse than the worst hostel in any other country. We didn’t have a choice, so it is what it is.

They let us go and walk in the city on arrival and that's where total CHAOS starts. People started gathering around us as soon as we walked into the street, and when we first stopped... There was no turning back. It seemed like a whole town gathered around us, all men of course. I felt like I'm in a nightmare; like all the people I took a picture of without asking, everyone had their phones pointing at me and the people in the group. A real stampede was created, men ran after us, went on bikes, trailers, cars... It wasn't worth it when the Taliban stopped and pulled out their rifles in an attempt to disperse the masses.

Fortunately, we were not far from the hotel, so in 10-15 minutes we were safe, leaving a crowd at the hotel entrance. Still with the phones pointed. Then we thought, was it wise to come to the hotel, now everyone knows where we sleep, and hardly so many people could be stopped by one fence. Who follows me since my first visit to Pakistan, a similar situation happened there, but I took this much harder, I was really scared for our safety.

Thank God, when we escaped to the hotel, the men broke up quickly and we learned our lesson the hard way...
