Dub progenitor Lee “Scratch” Perry is a legend, with a distinct creative presence that can be felt across all of his output. This is true from behind the mixing desk – where he pioneered sounds and production techniques that shaped Jamaican music’s global influence, all the way to the stage – where he brought his larger-than-life spirit to audiences internationally.

Born in Kendal, Jamaica before moving to Kingston, Perry began his career under the wings of Clement Coxsone Dodd’s sound system. Soon after, via a stint with Joe Gibbs, Perry went solo, forming his own Upsetter Records.

Driven by a desire to maintain complete artistic control over his work, Perry built his own studio – Black Ark – in his backyard during the early '70s. The creative space quickly became an iconic epicentre for experimentation across Jamaican music.

Presented as a Lee Perry & The Upsetters production, ‘Jungle Lion’ is a particular gem from this heyday, showcasing Perry's production prowess, and his mighty frontman presence. Unleashing guttural growls to commence the song, it soon descends into an effortlessly catchy riff, with golden horns leading the way in these deeply-grooving proceedings.

TLDR: The track is a vibrant hit of Jamaican sonic sunshine from the seventies, featuring Perry doing what he does best, complete with his signature flair on top.
