Get a metronome.
Make sure you’re holding your guitar properly. Anchor your right hand/arm or forearm on the guitar to make sure your hand stays steady. This will help you control your fingers.
Check your thumb position.
Pick a chord that you’re comfortable with for fingerpicking exercise #1. Set your metronome to a comfortable tempo (60-70bpm) and play through the chord with quarter and eighth notes picking with thumb, index, middle and ring fingers.
Incorporate additional chords into your practice routine. Ideally try to switch between chords with root notes on different strings (i.e G, C, F)
Mix things up by incorporating more complex picking patterns and trying these exercises at different tempos.
