I’ve been living in Malaysia 🇲🇾 for around 5 months. Here are my thoughts as a digital nomad 👇
Why Malaysia for digital nomads?
- Everyone speaks perfect English.
- Malaysia is one of the cheapest countries I’ve lived in. Rent, food, and transportation are relatively cheap.
- They offer a one-year digital nomad visa you can get online (malaysiadigital.mdec.my) with 0% foreign tax, but many nationalities can stay up to 3 months and do a visa run to Vietnam/Thailand.
Advantages:
- The weather is always 20-30 degrees, though it rains heavily almost every day, as in all Southeast Asian countries.
- You can rent an apartment with just your passport.
- Malaysia offers both sides – the well-developed city (KL) and nature. There are so many beautiful mountains, islands, and highlands.
Disadvantages:
- Malaysia’s roads are a real maze, not just in the city but all around. You’ll likely get lost a bunch with all the crazy turns. They also drive on the right side, which might throw you off if you’re used to the left!
- It is a super conservative country, so you need to respect their rules. For example, I went to many beaches where people were swimming in full clothes (tho you are not forced to do so).
- The Crypto community (in comparison to Dubai) is non-existent.
Overall, I consider KL my second base now after Dubai. It is beautiful, cheap, has nice weather all year round, is well-developed, and for some reason, I always have the best friendly experience at the airport (from the airplane to inside Malaysia in 15 min).
