a web3 baddie trying to build an equitable future
My current mission is to break web3 out of the box it has been placed in (and forced into). How do we reach out to those not here? How to we should the liberatory nature of this tech? How do we position web3 as the solution to current ills, not a facilitation of them?
Disgusting. Revoking funds from people fleeing Gaza is antithetical to web3 ethos as well as human rights.
Use CEXs very cautiously because things like this happen.
Also starting to use @@yup_io, but I feel the leaderboard is controlled by bots. How are the rewards calculated?
I am starting to think really hard about HOW we get new personas for devs and users into the industry. I think we need to take a note out of the 2021 movements like SheFi, Web3 Baddies, She256, and Boys Club.
The edge lord, degen persona is small and oversaturated. This persona is maybe only 1% of users. Lets go for the 99%. This will take massive reframes from many industry leaders, but it is time to be smart business people and do the hard thing.
I want everyone to know that web3 companies being cool with casual racism is a nonstarter for future growth.
If we want the industry to be global and permissionless, top companies need to be culturally competent enough to deal with xenophobia, anti-blackness, and racism. There have been numerous examples of this recently. Online space does not map to how most people feel and online space is how people vet companies. So the perceptions we build here matter to this industries future.
Leaders need to take note of this.
While DEI is not a perfect framework, web3/crypto needs to think about how we are cultivating the industry: what personas we are welcoming in and what personas are we excluding. The chain is permissionless, but that does not mean we have to stand behind every action onchain.
As a Black person in the industry, I am willing to push to improve this space since I understand how critical this tech is. Not everyone will be as gracious, nor should we expect them to be.
I think one of the biggest issues within web3 is many not understanding what makes the technology powerful. It functions as a way to share value, but few projects have really explored this.
Want to give a gift to your fav creator? Tiktok takes 90% of the value.
Tough, but important watch. We really need to contend with WHAT PEOPLE WANT. The technology has immense utility, but the space has been dominated by people who do not want what the chain promises: global community.
The web3 dream is what will attract people to imagine in the space. We cannot have a hostile industry. In the online space, many leaders have been cruel. I am not sure how it makes sense to say X person cannot be here, when we are trying to grow.
