At least 49 Armenian soldiers and 50 Azerbaijani military personnel were killed in renewed border clashes over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region on Tuesday, according to claims from both sides. The recent escalation of violence in the Caucasus is the worst since the 2020 war over the enclave that left thousands dead. Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of the initial provocations following the latest clashes. The two sides have fought wars over Nagorno-Karabakh, a majority ethnic Armenian enclave internationally recognized as Azerbaijan’s territory, in the 1980s and 90s, with the most recent being in 2020, at the end of which a ceasefire agreement was signed to deescalate tensions.
