Solo Staking Project - Day 3

OK it's built. Opened up the base unit, replaced the memory, took out the SSD and replaced with the NVMe, unplugged the Wifi card (going to be using an ethernet cable) screwed it back up. Done. Why do people buy pre-built NUCs?!

FYI I'm just using my TV as a monitor at this stage. The modem/router is positioned next to the TV so it's a logical place to keep the node and the TV works perfectly well as a makeshift monitor.

Installing Linux OS. The Rocket Pool docs suggest using Debian 11, it's stable and battle-tested so I'll go with that. Pretty simple, just downloaded the software and then created a bootable USB stick as per the instructions. So far so good.

All installed fine. As per the instructions I'm disabling the GUI (graphical user interface) so everything will be controlled by the command line. I'm entering unchartered waters here, I've never used a system without a full-blown OS before. Wish me luck!

Rocket Pool is so satisfying to work with!

I got a barebone Ryzen based NUC fra Asus and installed ram and nvme myself. Didn't remove the wifi which I regret, but now it's attesting so not gonna turn it off to fix that.

On that note I highly recommend to fine tune everything before your node goes live, because once it does it has to attest every 6 min on average. Doesn't cost too much to take it offline, but nice to avoid.

I am also happy I ran a node on testnet before I went ahead with the real stuff.

Good luck! Gonna follow your journey 🤓

    • Its a possible concern with regards to security, but I might recommend it installing tailscale. That way you can easily ssh into your node from anywhere while still being locked down and don't need to worry about it's IP changing.

      • Hell yeah nice job. I used NUCs but they are older gen and came without any SSD/ram/OS. So they were pretty cheap and I like the minimal form factor and power usage.
And can't recommend rocket pool enough, they're docs are fantastic
