kingston, jamaica was my first trip off the north american continent and changed me forever. the only places outside of america i had been were canada and a couple border towns in mexico so this was stimulation overload. as a white person you can’t realllllly just go to kingston and wander around. i mean you can, but without a guide you’re pretty limited to the downtown area or where a tour will take you, not freely exploring without concern. most who travel to jamaica stick to the north end of the island at all-inclusive non-immersive resorts. luckily we were teamed with a production company based in kingston and had a personal guide who was a friend of the marley family named cornbread. our first day, set aside for scouting, propelled me into a world i had never seen before. we covered all potential locations which included the famous trench town, adjacent rose town, and up in the hills (which felt exactly like what i had seen in cool runnings).

while scouting around rose town we had the most interaction with the locals out of any spot. the “bosses” of the neighborhood facilitated who would be extras for us and dealt with the $35 payments. they were the men of the group dressed the best, had cellphones, etc. while a bunch of kids ran around barefoot playing futbol in the dirt. many of them were fascinated with my camera and kept trying to swipe the screen as if it were a smartphone they saw an ad for. a few of them that were clearly the leaders of the kids group kept throwing poses for me so i walked away with a solid handful of shots that turned out legendary, this one being my favorite of the bunch. album cover type shit. i don’t even mind that the little one was looking away, it makes the image more real than if i had all three’s direct to camera eye contact.

i want to include a few of these images in this post but don’t want anyone to be confused as to what the collectible is so i will quote it with some bts instead (:
