Kalaloch Tree, aka the Tree of Life, Kalaloch Beach, Olympic National Park, Washington, USA
The tree that fights against death every day.
The Kalaloch Tree of Life is an iconic Sitka spruce tree located on Kalaloch Beach inside Olympic National Park in Washington, USA. This Sitka spruce tree defies the laws of nature by surviving despite intense erosion that washed away the earth around its roots, leaving it suspended above a cavity. Despite this extreme situation, the tree continues to produce leaves and shoots, valiantly resisting imminent death. It is also nicknamed “The Kalaloch Tree of Life”. A small underground stream that flows into the sea is believed to be the cause of the cavity under its roots. For decades, this tree has symbolized resistance and tenacity in the face of adversity.
