📍Tokyo, Japan 🇯🇵
How to describe the largest city in the world? How to convey the energy of 40 million people in Tokyo? I'll do my best, but will I succeed?
We arrived in Tokyo from Kyoto in just 2 hours on the Shinkansen bullet train (320 km/h). I was still in my kimono; I didn't have time to change after visiting the temples. As we stepped out of the train, the difference compared to the cities we had previously visited was obvious. For the first time, I encountered a crowd of people. And it was nearly midnight.
Tokyo's metro system is among the most well-organized in the world, so we quickly made our way to the hotel (Hundred Stay) in the Shin Okubo district. In Osaka, we paid 100 euros for a room for four people, but here it's 400 euros. Another difference. However, the location here is top-notch. Close to the metro and within walking distance of some of Tokyo's most famous areas.
There was no exploring on the first night; we start discovering Tokyo in the morning edition. Our starting point? Shibuya! Shibuya is home to a crossing that up to 3,000 people cross in a single minute. There's also the eponymous train station that sees 3 million passengers pass through daily!
You know what they say, don't use your phone while crossing the street. Well, in Shibuya, that's almost impossible. Because anyone who crosses it for the first time will want to capture the swarm of people around them. When we did that, we went to pet Hachiko, the most famous Japanese dog symbolizing loyalty and perseverance. Hachiko is a Japanese Akita. After the death of his owner, he waited in the same spot every day for his best friend to return.
The best view of the number of people crossing the Shibuya crossing is, surprisingly, from Starbucks. I have never seen such an obsession with Starbucks as in Japan. It's on every corner, so it's no surprise they managed to secure a location with such a view. Of course, expect to wait at least 15-20 minutes in line for your perfect latte, but if you've been in Japan for 7 days like us, you've learned to be patient.
Once we had a taste of Shibuya, we moved on to Harajuku, but I have to make a separate post about this district. 🍣🏙️🚥
