Duality At The Corner Of Luck & Prosperity
The term "American Dream" typically evokes ideas of success, opportunity, and upward mobility, but in the context of Chinatown the dream can take on a different meaning. For the man in white the American Dream may be about preserving his culture and traditions while also finding a way to thrive and succeed in a new country. He may struggle to find a sense of belonging and acceptance in a culture that is not his own, and his success might “only” look like a typical day for others. For the white man bundled up outside the restaurant the dream may be about breaking with tradition. His success may be determined by his ability to break free from typical expectations and norms. This photo itself expresses a duality in the overlapping, sometimes “unwanted” elements. It almost masquerades as a double exposure--stacked photos of two different men on the same corner, worlds apart, working for the same dream.
